Help for British Nationals

The Consular Section in the British High Commission exists to help British nationals in Botswana to live and travel in safety and ease. And we are here to help if you get into difficulty.

During the excitement of arranging a foreign trip, we ask you to spend a few minutes reading the information we provide for your safety. We want to help you to make an informed decision on your choice of destination, and to raise your awareness of safety issues as well as local customs and cultures.

Please make sure that you read carefully the travel advice for Botswana before you start planning your trip.

We can:

  • Help rescue you if you are in serious trouble.
  • Give advice on local issues affecting your safety.
  • In an emergency, issue passports and other documents.
  • Tell you how to transfer money.
  • Advise you on local doctors, lawyers and interpreters.
  • Liaise with your insurance provider in the event that medical attention is required.
  • Arrange for next of kin to be told in the event you are in trouble and advise on procedures.
  • Visit you if you have been arrested or put in prison. In certain circumstances we can arrange for messages to be sent to relatives or friends.
  • Give guidance on organisations who help trace missing persons.

We cannot:

  • Intervene in court cases.
  • Get you out of prison.
  • Give legal advice.
  • Investigate a crime.
  • Pay your hotel, legal, medical or any other bill.
  • Do work normally done by travel agents, airlines, banks or motoring organisation.
  • Get you somewhere to live, a job, in country visa or work permit.
  • Formally help you if you are a dual-national in the country of your second nationality.

We encourage you to register with us. This reduces unnecessary delay in finding you, when you require medical or other help.
